The 80 largest food retailers in the Ukrainian retail market managed to increase the total selling space of their stores in the first half of 2011. As a result of the closure of unprofitable stores, eight operators were forced to reduce their total retail space. Forty-seven companies maintained their total retail space unchanged from 2010.

A distinctive feature of 2011 was the increased activity of regional retailers in the retail market. The leaders among them in 2011 were Avanta Trading House (Lutsk, which has increased its total retail space by 80% since 2010), Natalka-Market (Odesa, 33%), PrimaService (Kyiv, 25%) and X5 Retail Group Ukraine (Kiev, 23%).

The second place in the rating, as in 2010, is occupied by a network of soft ATB discounters (Dnipropetrovsk). Growth in the first half of this year by 6% (235.5 thousand square meters) was achieved due to the opening of a large number of new ATB stores since the beginning of the year.

The third position in the ranking is occupied by the German retailer Metro Cash & Carry (Kiev). In the first half of this year, the company did not open new stores (they are planned for the second part of the year), leaving the total retail space unchanged - more than 218 thousand square meters.
