One of the leading British chains selling books and stationery - WHSmith, announced the installation of terminals for contactless payments in 45 of its stores.
Technical equipment is carried out with the support of Streamline & payment services Visa Europe, which supplies VisapayWave terminals. To pay for purchases, consumers will simply need to touch their card to the reading chip. The transaction limit for each transaction cannot currently exceed €15, but from 1 July 2012 it will be increased to €20.
Over the next three months, terminals will be installed at London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports, as well as at major UK railway stations.
The company believes that contactless payments will be most popular with customers in these locations, as they allow them to pay as quickly as possible when changing flights.
The retailer is also confident that the new service will improve the quality of customer service, as it will significantly reduce the time it takes to complete a single transaction.
WHSmith has long been committed to using the latest technology. For example, the retailer was one of the first to introduce self-checkout for customers. However, it currently does not use them.
