Eight Common Myths About 4K TVs

Eight Common Myths About 4K TVs

We often hear questions from customers: what type of 4K-TV should I choose? We've collected the most common myths that spread misinformation.

Myth one: 4K TVs are very expensive

A few years ago, when UHD TVs were just starting to appear in mass sales, this statement rang true. But today, there are enough affordable 4K TV devices available on the market.

Recommendation: If you don't play video games supporting ultra-high resolution and don't buy Blu-ray discs with UHD movies, it might be worth holding off on buying a 4K TV for a while. 1080p resolution on an old TV is perfectly sufficient.

Myth Two: You Need an Extended Warranty

Many electronics stores offer extended warranties for TVs, which will be valid after the manufacturer's official warranty expires. It's possible the store really wants to reduce your risk, but it still seems like a fair trade. According to Consumer Reports, only 4% of TVs require warranty service within the first four years.

Myth Three: Curved TVs Are Better

Yes, that's true if you watch them alone and only sit in the center of the screen. But for a family, watching a curved panel won't be the best choice. When changing the viewing angle, which is inevitable for a viewer sitting to the left or right, the image quality changes, and the surround sound effect disappears. It's better to buy a 4K TV with a flat screen and wide viewing angles.

Myth four: The more expensive the TV, the better the sound

Premium TVs are equipped with better sound systems and acoustic support. Not entirely true. Considering that expensive TVs, as usual, are the most subtle, it is impossible to place a powerful audio system in the housing. If you want really good surround sound, it is better to consider buying a soundbar.

Recommendation: In general, for unpretentious home use, built-in speakers with micro-programmed acoustic amplifiers are sufficient. Pity the neighbors if you don't have a whole house to create a home theater that won't bother anyone.

Myth Five: HDMI Cables Are Too Expensive

And that's a real lie. All HDMI cables are basically the same, so there's no point in buying the most expensive one, which will supposedly save the signal reaching your TV from unnecessary interference. The only thing we want to draw your attention to: buy HDMI cables that are compliant with the 2.0a standard or higher ("High Speed" marking).

Myth Six: HDR Types Are the Same

You might assume that all these HDR types are a scam, as in the case of an extended warranty, but there are actually several HDR types, and the difference between them is. In total, there are three types of HDR (extended dynamic range) technology: HDR10, designed to provide 10-bit color depth, as well as HDR Dolby Vision and HDR10+, which support 12-bit color depth. The latter two types provide the best picture quality.

Myth 7: New TVs last several years

This misconception probably comes from the information that the average lifespan of an OLED display is 30,000 hours of operation (about 3 years). But in this case, we mean continuous operation of the TV, i.e. without turning off during this entire time. Under conditions of standard home use, the service life will be about 15 years. And if we remember that 96% of TVs do not require warranty service within the first 4 years, we can say that modern UHD TVs are quite reliable.

Myths: It's not worth paying for Smart TV

If you plan to watch movies from external storage media, then paying for Smart TV is definitely not worth it. In such a case, it would be more logical to buy a monitor for your computer with a larger diagonal. Smart TV on the TV will allow you to make the most of the wireless connection and conveniently provide access to streaming media content. In addition, you can use the voice control function.

Recommendation: as an alternative, you can use another multimedia device (for example, Android TV BOX) with the Smart TV function or a game console (PlayStation 4 or Xbox One). However, virtually all modern TVs are equipped with "smart features" in one way or another. And if you already have a game console, purchasing a 4K UHD Smart TV will significantly expand the functionality of your TV.
