Google Now Launcher is a bargain for someone looking for a deep, pure Android experience. Created by Google (and pre-installed on Nexus phones), a single install is all it takes to take advantage of everything the manufacturer has to offer. Transitions between apps and widgets are fast and smooth.
Also, on the left side of the screen is Google Now, so you can quickly launch the search engine, view recently viewed cards, location, and all your browsing habits and perform all kinds of voice searches "OK Google". The only downside is that you don't get the high level of personalization available in more robust overlays - you get what Google gives you.
Use the Google Now overlay if you're looking for high stability and consistency on Android. For the full experience, combine it with the Google Keyboard.
Nova is a very popular launcher that offers a whole host of animation options, folder views, and desktops. A particularly cool addition is the scroll effects, which make application shortcuts work in a similar way to using a scrollable folder. You can also choose a standard touchscreen, similar to the Action Launcher overlay. Uploading standard icons and wallpapers is easy, especially when connected to Google Drive. You can back up your layouts and themes directly to the cloud and restore them directly from there, so you can restore everything to your new phone without spending too much time.
Nova is a very functional launcher that can be exactly what you want, making it completely unique; it all depends on how much time you dedicate to it.
Aviate organizes your apps into categories. You can, of course, customize these categories manually, but Aviate can also offer suggestions on how to create them. Aviate knows where you are and what time of day it is and builds screens called Spaces, which make using your phone much easier. For example, when you connect headphones, Aviate offers quick access to your media and favorite music apps. As you head home or to the office, it offers you navigation. Aviate excels because it's meticulously crafted and requires minimal attention, even if you sometimes feel lost in the customization possibilities.
Apex offers a similar range of features to Nova. You can adjust the icon size, scroll and change animations, freely customize the home screen grid, and customize commands with gestures like pinching, pressing, and swiping. The Apex notification plugin uses various apps and is now included on all Android Wear devices. It works as long as you're willing to upgrade to the Pro version for $4.49. There are many more features available in the Google Play Store that let you change the overall look of Android, but Apex is good enough on its own for its functionality.
