socketOne Canadian company knows how to use RFID technology to make your regular electrical outlets help you save energy.

The company is developing special plugs that will be installed between an electrical appliance and a wall outlet. This device is equipped with a microprocessor, wireless network components, and an RFID chip. The chip will allow you to "communicate" with your home PC and display detailed information about how much electricity the device you are using consumes.

The data collected by these plugs throughout the house can be sent to a website for research that will help understand which devices in the house consume the most electricity and how to manage this process more efficiently.

Such devices can be programmed to turn on/off lights while you are on vacation, or, for example, to turn on the air conditioner an hour before you return home from work in the summer.
