One solution for families and classrooms with children with mild to severe speech impairments is the use of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) RFID.
The PECS system uses Picture cards to enable children to communicate their thoughts: for example, with just two cards, a child can communicate an idea such as: "I want" - "lemonade" or "I hear" - "cat". The PECS system is an option for many non-verbal children; however, it only works in the presence of an adult who understands the meaning of the cards.
Today, there is an electronic device, about the size of a netbook, that can speak out words chosen by a child. Special picture cards have a built-in RFID chip, and the device itself has a built-in RFID reader. When a child waves a card over the device, the child says the corresponding word.
By helping children pronounce phrases in this way, RFID enables non-verbal children to communicate with their peers, with adults who are not familiar with PECS symbols (such as grandparents), and with those who are not physically in the room at the time.
