Google Maps is getting a huge new feature on iOS and Android after testing on Pixel phones.

Google Maps will begin rolling out a new type of navigation feature to the iOS and Android versions of its app.

This feature is called Live View and uses the phone's camera to overlay navigation on top of the real world, making it easier to navigate.

This type of augmented reality (AR) navigation has so far only been available on Google's Pixel line of phones.

The company says that after sufficient testing on Pixels, it plans to release a beta version for iOS and Android phones this week.

"There's nothing like exploring a city on foot - it's a great way to experience the sights and sounds of a new place. But it can be difficult to know exactly which direction to go," Google announced in a blog post.

With a beta feature called Live View, you can use augmented reality (AR) to better see which way to go. Arrows and directions are placed in the real world to guide your path.

"We've been testing Live View in the Local Guides and Pixel community for the past few months, and now this week we're expanding the beta to Android and iOS devices that support ARCore and ARKit."

As for using this feature, when it launches, users will be given the option to use Live View whenever they enter walking directions. An invitation to try AR will appear next to the traditional navigation button.
