The technology is called the NutriSmart Technology System and uses edible RFID tags. Developed by Hannes Harms, a student at London's Royal College of Art, the NutriSmart prototype RFID tags are embedded directly into the food itself to track the entire supply chain from start to finish. If edible, RFID tags to tag products, then the refrigerator will tell you when the products are about to expire. Shopping and preparing food will become fully automated. Our microwaves and ovens will scan food and automatically begin cooking in the required mode.

Another part of the NutriSmart system is the "Smart Plate," which behaves like a professional nutritionist. When food with a built-in RFID chip is placed on this plate, the RFID reader, which this device is equipped with, transmits information about calories, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to the user's mobile device. "Smart plate" can also warn the owner if their food contains potentially dangerous ingredients, such as those that cause allergies, etc.
