Who will be responsible for the Petya virus?

Software vendors - Microsoft - security experts are responsible for the effects of cyberattacks...

Software suppliers are responsible for the effects of cyberattacks - Microsoft - cybersecurity expert Włodzimierz Tsap.

"The rapid spread of the "Petya virus in Ukraine and the world is due to the fact that most companies use sensitive software in their work," he said In a comment for "GORDON" cybersecurity expert, technical director of SHALB Włodzimierz Tsap.

"The problem is the use of dangerous software. Cyberattacks will continue. In today's world, it is inevitable. Why exactly was this attack so successful? There is a protocol called "Samba" that is used in all offices. It allows you to open a directory on a remote computer and access files. A flaw was found in this protocol. All companies exchange files, this function cannot be disabled. This is one of the main reasons why the cyberattack spreads so quickly", – Tsap noted.

In his opinion, the software supplier must be responsible for the effects of cyber attacks.
"The problem is the low qualifications of the staff and the software. The software supplier – Microsoft – must be responsible for the effects of cyber attacks. This means that lawsuits should be filed against this company. They did not ensure the appropriate quality of their code. And if the companies that purchased this software suffered financial losses, they should demand compensation. For example, if the brakes in a car are damaged, the manufacturer recalls the entire batch. Microsoft itself sells the software and if errors are discovered, it simply asks for forgiveness. It seems to me that their responsibility must be more serious", – the interlocutor emphasized.

He emphasized that cyberattacks mainly focus on company computers.
"After this attack, necessary measures should be taken. To avoid problems that may arise as a result of such cyberattacks, they create backup copies of data. And here the question arises: how were the state structures, for example, ready for this? I believe that they need to switch to the Linux operating system, where security vulnerabilities can be detected much faster. Of course, this does not mean that that all Windows computers will be infected with a virus. Moreover, cyberattacks mainly target corporate computers. This is not a critical problem, like, for example, a nuclear power plant accident," summarized Tsap.

In Ukraine, on June 27, a massive cyberattack was recorded, the "Petya" virus, which paralyzed the work of computer networks, banks, media, trade organizations, etc.

In Europe, the virus appeared on June 28.
