As reported by Vedomosti, citing sources within the company, Russian Post wants to solve the problem of lost parcels and letters by attaching RFID-tags.
The company reports that by the end of 2011, RFID-tags, as part of a pilot project, will be attached to EMS express mail. In 2012-2013, RFID tags will be used to mark all postal containers: containers, bags, packages, etc. And already in 2014, according to the plan, RFID tags are promised to decorate all correspondence in general – letters, small parcels and packages.
Presumably, the RFID-chips will be manufactured by Russian manufacturers, for example, the company «Sitronics». Vice President of «««Sitronics» IrinaLaninatold “Vedomosti” that the company has not yet received any applications regarding this project, , but she considers the program of "tagging" of mail messages to be very timely, which will allow the creation of a new sales market for domestic microelectronics.
According to estimates of another company, Rusnano, the "pilot" will cost Russian Post in the amount of approximately 50-60 million rubles (one tag today costs on average 18-20 rubles (5-6 UAH). It is difficult to estimate how much it might ultimately cost to transfer all correspondence to RFID tracking, given that this technology, even in developed countries with much smaller territories, is still more of an experimental than a real project, although it is predicted to have a great future.
It is only unclear how a change in tracking technology will help solve the problems of the Russian postal service - as long as the logistics and service system (in terms of the "human factor") remains the same, such as in the famous video.
