One of the world's largest steel producers in South Korea, POSCO, has implemented its own RFID-solution in the field of logistics called Smart-Works System. The automated solution includes UPM DogBone RFID tags, which enable the tracking of multi-ton metal structures from production to delivery to the end customer. UPM DogBone's modified tags operate at ultra-high frequencies, feature two antennas, and are mounted vertically inside heavy metal spools. They are positioned perpendicular to the curved elements of the coating, thereby solving the reading problem. The tags are attached to the metal spools during packaging and are read during crane transport to the warehouse, storage, and preparation for shipment. Customers have access to real-time information about POSCO products and can use this data to customize and plan their own product transactions.

The POSCO system includes paper tags from UPM DogBone, industrial handheld devices, RFID readers attached to cranes and placed on factory gates, enterprise resource planning and production execution systems, and a server.

RFID system will be launched at two POSCO factories and used by a select group of 17 customers. By October, POSCO plans to attach tags to all of its products, which amounts to more than two million components annually.
