Kodi 18 'Leia. Everything you need to know about the next version of Kodi

Kodi 17.3 "Krypton" is the current release available through the Windows Store and the Kodi website. But work on the next version of the popular media server has already begun.

After the usual naming process with the community, Kodi 18 will be known as the beloved Princess "Leia."

"Our hearts ache to have lost a wonderful woman and actress, and with her the character she portrayed, the princess we grew up with. Thus, Kodi 18 will be named "Leia" in honor of Carrie Fisher" as a respect to one of the "Star Wars" characters.

FAQ

When will Kodi 18 Leia be available?

There is no official release date at this time.

What's new?

It is still in development, so the final feature list is not publicly shown. It's still in its early stages, so there aren't many obvious clues as to what has changed.

One of the recent big developments is that there will finally be a 64-bit version of Kodi 18 for the Windows operating system.

Do I need to delete Kodi 17 to try the new version?

No, you don't. If you're using Kodi 17 from the Windows Store, the installer will show the new version on your computer.

Will this be enough for my main gathering right now?

No, you have to stick with Kodi 17. Leia is still a long way off, and many things don't work properly.

What does it look like?

The version has been updated from Kodi 16 to Kodi 17, from the old "Confluence" version to the newer, more modern "Estuary" version. There's no indication that this will change with version 18.

Will it be available on Xbox One?

Of course! The Kodi design team has already declared a commitment to creating a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) version for the Windows Store that will work on Xbox One. Whether this will happen with version 18 or not is unclear.

Is there anything else to say?

It's not about features, but there are already important updates. As mentioned above, the UWP app is progressing and will have a 64-bit version for Windows for the first time.

New features are being discussed, and developers are highlighting them to the community through "dev journals" with the latest details, including voice search integration and recommendations for flashing Lei on Android.
