Guide Dogs, a UK charity that specializes in training guide dogs and also develops various rehabilitation services for people with visual impairments, is currently working with the University of Reading to develop a unique RFID system that will help people find their way.
The system uses RFID technology to help people with visual impairments get around. It consists of three main components: RFID tags, a receiver, and a database of pre-recorded location messages for each tag. RFID tags are installed in various public places, such as bus stops or shopping malls. When they come into view, receivers read the tag and tell the user exactly where he/she is. The system can also provide the owner with information about the surrounding environment. The system, called "Talking Tags," was recently tested in London, where it received positive feedback from users and organizations that plan to participate in the distribution of the system, including local authorities.
