On-line trade is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe, according to analysts at Colliers International. Since 2008, e-commerce volume has increased by 70%, exceeding €200 billion last year. The leaders in this area are the UK (€59.4 billion), Germany (€45.07 billion), and France (€38.66 billion). They account for 71% of all online sales in Europe.

The UK has the largest share of the online trading market – 12%. It is followed by Germany (9%) and Switzerland (8.7%). On average, in almost all countries in 2011, the online trading market managed to draw just over 1% of the market from offline retailers. The exception was Italy, where the online trade market share, on the contrary, decreased by 2%, which occurred due to a greater increase in sales in regular stores.

The highest growth in online sales in 2011 was recorded in France and Poland - more than 20%. High figures were shown by Sweden and Italy (18% each), as well as Norway (17%).

In 2012, experts predict the growth of online trade at an average level of 16% in Europe, and an increase in the average market share of online sales to 9%. The greatest growth is predicted in Poland and France (as in the previous year - more than 20%). The UK will continue to lead in e-commerce share, with a market share expected to exceed 13% by the end of 2012.

The Ukrainian online sector is just at the beginning, but it has significant potential. Over the past 5 years, the Ukrainian online trading market has shown significant growth, regardless of economic fluctuations. According to the Ukrainian Processing Center and the Association of Electronic Business Participants, online trade volumes in Ukraine increased by 30-50% in 2011 compared to 2010. Ukrainians spent almost €2 billion on online purchases in 2011. From January to November 2011, the turnover of online stores using the eCommerce Connect system increased by 98% (compared to the same period in 2010).

According to Appleton Mayer, the most popular e-commerce segments in Ukraine are computers and office equipment (including components), household appliances, and books. Other categories of goods that respondents most often purchased online also include: mobile phones and accessories (27%), ticket reservations/purchase (22%), souvenirs and gifts (16%), food and drinks (12%), children's goods (11%), multimedia products (9%), stationery (9%), photo and audio equipment (8%).

Natalia Kravets, Director of the Retail Real Estate Department at Colliers International: “In Europe, where the e-commerce market share is high, the most vulnerable were small towns adjacent to large cities. The level of assortment does not allow small shopping centers to compete with the variety of choice in e-stores. Large regional shopping centers, as well as specialized shopping corridors, turned out to be the most competitive.

In Ukraine, online retail has the greatest impact on shopping centers, on the contrary, in large cities. Unlike Europeans, for whom the main criterion for choosing a store is the assortment, Ukrainians still prioritize price. And it is online stores that can offer lower prices. In small towns, the impact of online retail is almost not felt yet, since online stores are much less popular there due to low internet coverage and the poor level of logistics infrastructure necessary for product delivery.
