The official announcement of the Android M operating system took place at the Google I/O conference on May 28, 2015, where no one revealed the commercial name of the new platform or the release version number. And now this has been announced on the Android page on Twitter, along with a presentation video.
Simultaneously with the announcement of the name of the new Android edition, Google released the final version of the Android 6.0 SDK development kit, API 23, and the latest, third Developer Preview build of this OS. As is known, the final edition of Android 6.0 will be released very soon, this fall.
Among the visible advantages of the release are the mobile payment system Android Pay and standardized fingerprint verification at the platform level. For devices equipped with a fingerprint scanner, unlocking the gadget and authorizing purchases in Google Play will be available, and developers will be able to integrate the corresponding API into any Android application.
By tradition, each new version of Android is named after a dessert in alphabetical order. The very first ones were named: 1.0 Apple Pie («Apple Pie»), 1.1 Banana Bread ("Banana Bread") 1.5 Cupcake ("Keks") 4.1–4.3 Jelly Bean ("Jelly Candy"), 4.4 KitKat ("Kit-Kat") 5.0–5.1 Lollipop ("Lollipop").
As for the letter M, it turns out that it stands for the word Marshmallow, which translates from English as "marshmallow" or "pastila." At the same time, the version number will not be 5.2, as previously assumed, but 6.0.
