What is OpenELEC?

What is OpenELEC?

OpenELEC (Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center) – A GNU/Linuxhome theater distribution for a PC, based on the Kodimedia player (new name XBMC).

The idea behind OpenELEC is to allow people to use a home theater HTPC like any other device, attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky Box. Instead of managing a full operating system, configure and install the necessary packages to turn it into a hybrid media center. OpenELEC is designed to be easy to install, manage, and use, transforming your HTPC (HTPC) into a set-top box rather than a full-blown computer.

What hardware does OpenELEC run on?

Since the main idea of OpenELEC is to be lightweight, it uses very few system resources for the processor or memory. With support for Intel HD Graphics, NVIDIA's GeForce & ION platform, AMD's Radeon & Fusion platform, and Broadcom's Crystal HD chip, OpenELEC can support high-definition content on machines with low-power processors by offloading video content to supported graphics cards and decoders. OpenELEC supports a wide range of graphics cards, allowing you to transform your new and existing computers into full-featured home theater systems. This means you can now build (or buy) small, quiet, even fanless machines that can effectively serve as a media center.

Virtually all of our Android mini PCs  have such firmware.

What's different aboutOpenELEC?

Good question! You could install Windows or your favorite Linux distribution on your computer and then run Kodi on top—and it would work—but it wouldn't be as fast or as easy as OpenELEC. OpenELEC is built from the ground up specifically for one task—running Kodi. Other operating systems are designed to be multi-purpose, so they include all sorts of software to run services and programs that won't be used. OpenELEC, however, only includes the software needed to run Kodi. Because of this, it's very small (approximately 150 MB), installs in literally minutes, and can boot very quickly, in 5-20 seconds, depending on the type of device used. Unlike other Kodi solutions, OpenELEC isn't based on Ubuntu. In fact, it's not based on any Linux distribution; OpenELEC was built from the ground up specifically to function as a media center. This means it doesn't include drivers for things that simply won't be used, like 3G cards and graphics tablets, for example. Furthermore, OpenELEC is designed to be managed like a device: it can automatically update itself and can be managed entirely within a graphical interface. Even though it runs Linux, you'll never need to browse the console, command terminal, or have Linux knowledge to use it.

Sounds too good to be true! Doesn't it?
