Polish online television in the EU

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and Over-The-Top Television (OTT)

International Polish television, news and movies 24/7, sports coverage, children's programs, foreign radio broadcasts - all this was once a dream for Polish citizens in the EU. We have a solution to this problem! But let's start with what is IPTV and OTT?

IPTV

IPTV is one form of offering digital television, which involves delivering video over the Internet and/or Intranet. Broadband networks supporting the IP protocol are used as a transmission medium.

The most common mistake when talking about IPTV is to equate it with watching video files downloaded from the Internet on a computer screen or using streaming (YouTube) from websites. IPTV does not use the Internet, but a dedicated part of the network, which is safer in terms of threats originating from the network (viruses, hacker attacks, etc.) and guarantees much less susceptibility to changes in the available transmission speed than on the Internet.

OTT

A service providing TV signal and video content via the Internet. Unlike traditional methods of TV signal distribution, it does not require additional infrastructure on the end customer's end, such as a satellite dish, connection to a coaxial network, or a dedicated IP TV network. The customer receives the video by accessing the Internet from any or a specific source.

Online television is still at the stage of shaping its business model. The term OTT refers to live broadcasts, which are currently being widely tested by Google, VoD and "catch up" services, i.e. downloading content from servers at any time chosen by the customer, but also services added to traditional television and provided via the Internet, e.g. accessing content, sending and paying bills, games, etc.

OTT's openness also means the possibility of broadcasting by non-commercial users and small entrepreneurs. Using Media Server software allows you to embed broadcasts from local events, conferences, etc. The most popular software of this type is: Adobe Media Server, Wowza Media Server, Windows Media Server, Icecast Server, Shoutcast Server.

Requirements for IPTV transmission:

Bandwidth requirements:

MPEG-2:

  • 480i SD MPEG-2: 3-9 Mb/s

  • 720p HD MPEG-4: 9-12 Mb/s

All computers (regarding system requirements), special TV BOXes, media players, TVs with Smart TV technology, mobile devices can be used as IPTV client devices.
