After several years of struggle, the global POS technology market grew by 6.9% in 2010, according to research by IHL Group.
Shipping increased in all four major global regions (North America, Europe/Middle East Africa, Latin/South America, Asia/Pacific). Steady growth in the Asia/Pacific market was driven by new shipments to China, India, Korea, and Indonesia.
The share of POS devices with pre-installed Microsoft operating systems increased by 34.1% worldwide, and overall, 87.4% of POS terminals shipped were on the DOS or Microsoft Windows platform.
As Greg Buzek, President of IHL Group, said: “Overall, it was a good year, but several threats to this market have emerged on the horizon. New mobile devices like the Apple iPad, priced under $500, pose a significant threat to the traditional POS market, particularly for specialty stores and hospitality establishments.”
“Our recent research has shown that more than 50% of specialty retailers intend to use handheld POS devices to replace many of their standard POS systems,“ Buzek added.
