London to introduce contactless RFID card payments for travel

Currently, the software and hardware are being modernized to implement the ability to accept not only Oyster cards, but also devices that support NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Research has shown that the number of contactless bank cards in circulation in the UK has reached 9 million.

All 8,000 London buses will be ready for the new payment system by the end of July 2012, before the start of the Summer Olympics.
