London to introduce contactless RFID card payments for travel

The London Department of Transport has decided to make payment for travel on the tube, bus, and tram using contactless bank cards by the end of 2012.

The Department for Transport for London has decided to introduce contactless bank cards for payment on the underground, buses and trams by the end of 2012.

Currently, the software and hardware are being modernized to implement the ability to accept not only Oyster cards, but also devices that support NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Research has shown that the number of contactless bank cards in circulation in the UK has reached 9 million.

All 8,000 London buses will be ready for the new payment system by the end of July 2012, before the start of the Summer Olympics.
