2D barcode scanners: purpose and specifications

2D barcode scanners: purpose and specifications

QR or 2D codes are now present on the packaging of all products without exception. Their application allows for large blocks of information to be placed on a small label. This information is not necessarily limited to a brief description and price. A single 2D code can contain store details, a link to an online resource, and recommendations for storage and use of the product. Special devices called 2D scanners are used to read this information.

What are these devices?

This is a small electronic device capable of reading and decoding both QR and one-dimensional codes. While possessing all the capabilities of laser scanners, it differs from the latter in its broader capabilities, and with the presence of certain interfaces, it can be used in conjunction with EGAIS systems not only in retail but also in logistics.

The advantage of 2D scanners is the ability to read codes from any angle and even from the screen of mobile devices. Their appearance has allowed to significantly expand the functionality of retail chains.

Types of scanners

Depending on the design features, the following models of devices are distinguished:

  • stationary;
  • hand-held;
  • wireless;
  • bioptic.

Devices also differ in technical characteristics. Wireless 2D scanners have the greatest capabilities. Equipped with CCD matrices of CCD diodes, they are able to decode barcodes using photography technology. In addition, information can be transferred from them via USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Advantages of 2D code scanners

Unlike conventional equipment, such devices are able to recognize both QR and PDF417 or other barcodes. Moreover, it is capable of recognizing information even from gadget screens, eliminating the need for printed media.

The advantages of such models also include:

  • the ability to recognize codes at any angle;
  • increased customer service speed;
  • small dimensions;
  • aesthetic appearance;
  • ease of use.

In addition, the cost of such devices is low, making them accessible to a wide range of consumers.

The scope of application of QR code scanners is diverse and is not limited to trade alone. Such devices can be used in the following areas:

  • warehouse storage;
  • transportation and logistics;
  • marketing, including transferring links to websites;
  • pharmaceuticals.
